Economic options to retrofit wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) without tertiary treatments need be explored. In this regard, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) can hybridized with existing technologies, upgrading the removal performance of original techniques while avoiding replacement costs. Yet, few demonstrations merged have been given. For first time, in work it was built a lab-scale model BES secondary settler, namely e-settler, enhance polishing already WWTPs. particular, concomitantly increase nitrogen and perform (WW) disinfection, further treatments. e-settlers, increased through stimulation. Concomitant ammonium nitrate nitrite accumulation negligible amount nitrous oxide emissions were observed.
